Abstract : Electrophysiology is a branch of physiology studying electric properties of biological cells and tissues. The electrical response of nerves or other biological cells is modelled by coupled systems of partial differential equations. The typical size of cells or thickness of axons in a nerve bundle is small compared with the size of the domain, and so such problems become computationally heavy. Deriving a macroscopic problem using the methods of asymptotic analysis and homogenization provides one with a more feasible model. In my lecture, I will show some typical models used in electrophysiology both in periodic and random settings.
